Dodgson is the doctor in Blackwater.
Dodgson grew up back east, with a cosmopolitan life in New York City. He met his future wife when she came with her elder brother to New York; he was there for college and she went with him to preach the faith to the easterners. Dodgson fell in love and agreed to move back west and convert if she would marry him. Unfortunately, soon after they married his wife caught a bad case of consumption and died. Many people died in the wake of the disease, but her death destroyed James. He threw himself completely into research on how he could have prevented her death. The midwife, Theresa Belle, is the only reason the town still at all has a functioning doctor; she largely took over his tasks, and when there is something that truly requires his help she is the only one who can persuade him to leave his study.
